The aluminium coating bonds with the exhaust by heat. This process is called aluminisation. The coated surface is white and slightly rough like fine grinding. Therefore in the most cases it will be painted with oven or exhaust colour.

The finishing-treatment
As you can see from the various forums and the feedback all paints are not the same. Most of the customary heat proof paints only withstand temperatures up to 600°C and therefore burn away fast from the exhaust.
In the USA you can get an exhaust paint that can reach up to 1100°. It is called VHT Ceramic coating and is available in black and silver.
